The very first marathon I completed feeling strong & quick occurred because I saw a buddy as I passed the begin line.
He lives far away and we chatted for a bit. He was a marathon streaker and had to run sluggish to avoid injuries and be able to run A great deal of races.
He was truly disciplined about his speed and I held back to chat.
After a few miles I stated bye to run my own race. I chosen up the speed and ended up feeling better than normal towards the end.
I was able to push myself in the last miles and hit unfavorable splits (which seldom occurred before)!
I understood you must never ‘bank time’ by going out quick but I couldn’t stop myself!
Pacing myself slower than I would’ve normally –> resulted in a quicker race than my normal strategy.
If you’re new to running or racing- begin slower than you believe you should.
Tips for Pacing Yourself:
If you feel great at the halfway point –> speed Up!
If you feel great in the last 3rd –> speed Up more!
If you feel fantastic with a couple miles to go –> choose IT! See what you’re made of!!
